Combining a bright, non-glaring backcountry lantern with a powerful, precise flashlight, the Black Diamond Voyager lantern provides ultra-versatile lighting for post-sunset campsite activities. In lantern mode it produces 75 lumens of bright, dimmable, ambient, non-glaring light and in flashlight mode it creates a strong 50-lumen beam. These two modes and a third dual mode (both lantern and flashlight on) are controlled from one convenient switch. From cooking dinner to going to the river for water, the Voyager is an extremely versatile addition to any camping kit.
With so many on offer these days, it is great to have a name you can trust. This item is certainly that and will be a perfect buy. The distributor have added some great touches and this equals great value.

Great dual purpose flashlight/lantern
Let me preface this review that I own about 4 Black Diamond Apollo lanterns, which looks very similar to this, but minus the stand up legs. The Apollo has a very nice feel, the sliding 'globe' clear piece has a very nice sliding 'bushing' or something to keep the sliding action very smooth, even after quite a bit of usage. I have given out a few more as gifts! I got the Voyager because it had some very similar features/specifications, a little larger than the Orbit, but with the benefit of being able to be used as a flashlight. I carry this with me in my backpack as I travel. The sliding mechanism doesn't quite feel as quality as the Apollo (thus my 1 star reduction), but the brightness and overall usability is quite good. I miss the legs from the Apollo, but it does save on weight and helps to keep the size a bit smaller. It still has the ability to dim/brighten the light by pressing and holding the power button. Overall, it still is a very good quality product and performs...

Quite a Light
The Black Diamond Voyager Lantern is a GREAT little lantern. It is super lightweight (I think the batteries weigh more than the lantern itself does)and is wonderful to light the tent. My son heard a noise in the night and I turned it on and set it to the dimmest setting and it was still fine for the rest of the weekend. I am sure that it will be good for another weekend or two as the summer progresses. The fact that it just uses 4 AA batteries rather the 8 D cells that my old Coleman used saves a LOT of money AND weight. I really like the split rings, and that the globe slides down to make it even more compact.
I have already recommended this to some of my friends, and I found out about it from another scouter friend who has the Orbit model (I like that this Voyager has the flashlight that can illuminate under the unit).
Lots of light, itty bitty size
We were initially considering the lower lumen Orbit lantern by Black Diamond, in part because one family member was obsessing over a few ounces for those far and few backpacking trips. Spring for the extra couple ounces, as the added capability more than offsets it in my mind. The extra 30 lumens came in handy strung up over a picnic table while playing cards at night. For a little lantern, with relatively fresh batteries, it puts out a lot of light. We particularly liked the "downlight" feature, so that you didn't have a cone of shadow at the table (or in a tent) that you get with a traditional style lantern. Also, the split handle made it very easy to hang it on rope, or on a clip in the tent.
The downside is that it is a bit of a battery hog, especially if you are using it at max light, and with the downlight. Packing extra batteries or bringing a solar recharger gets around the issue, albeit with more gear needed. However, for our situation, the pros of...
